If the backup heating source is a fossil fuel heating system, the pre-set outdoor temperature at which the fossil fuel system turns on must be at or below the Outdoor Temperature Cap.
Today's cold-climate heat pumps can provide efficient heating at outdoor temperatures as low as -15ºF and operate at 2–4 times the efficiency of a boiler or furnace. Customers are encouraged to work with their contractor to choose a temperature setting that maximizes heat pump usage and aligns with their comfort and efficiency goals.
Use our Integrated Control Switchover Temperature Calculator to determine the most cost-effective temperature, often below the Outdoor Temperature Cap, based on current fuel prices.
| Pre-Existing Heating Fuel | Maximum Switchover Temperature* |
|---|---|
| Oil, Natural Gas | ≤ 30º F |
| Propane | ≤ 5º F |
*Pre-set outdoor temperatures are verified during post-installation inspections and are based on 2019–2021 average fuel costs. The 30°F cap for natural gas heating systems is designed to support reduced greenhouse gas emissions rather than operational savings.
