Heat Pump Water Heaters

Get instant savings by purchasing a heat pump water heater.

Heat pump water heaters are the most efficient way to heat water in a home—up to three times more efficient than conventional electric water heaters.

Rather than generating heat through inefficient electric resistance or fossil fuels such as oil and natural gas, these units extract heat from the air surrounding the unit to heat water. Due to this, heat pump water heaters are best suited for homes with basements or separate utility rooms (these units lose efficiency if installed in closets without proper clearance).

The Mass Save Water Heater Savings Calculator can help you determine your annual savings with a heat pump water heater.

In addition to incentives, you can also take advantage of federal tax credits to further lower the price of purchasing and installing a heat pump water heater.

NOTE: Several federal tax credits authorized under the Inflation Reduction Act are expiring at the end of 2025, including for heat pumps. Expenditures made after December 31, 2025, will no longer be eligible for this credit.

Rebates are available for residents replacing an existing electric, propane, natural gas, or oil water heater.
