Need
Renovation of a 19th century building and equipment upgrade
Solution
Comprehensive design analysis and energy-efficient retrofit of building systems
Project Summary
The move toward becoming green involved gutting and retrofitting a nineteenth century building and investing in a new Pulse-Flow continuous batch washing system that replaced eight regular industrial washer/ extractors. ALADCO currently processes 600,000 lbs. in linen products per month. The old process used about 2.5 gallons of water per pound. Today, the new process uses .4 gallons of water per pound, saving 1,250,000 gallons of water each month. In addition to the reduction in water usage, the effect is compounded by a significant reduction in natural gas and electricity required to heat 84 percent less water than the old system. ALADCO also invested in a lint-free microfiber wiping towel, microfiber mop system and the Environap, an environmentally friendly, smaller napkin that is designed as a cost effective alternative to paper napkins. Overall, the cloth approach heightens the dining experience and removes an entire stream of trash from the table to the landfill.
Mass Save as Strategic Partner
Berkshire Gas' Energy Efficiency Department worked with ALADCO every step of the way. After participating in Berkshire’s Commercial & Industrial Energy Audit Working closely with ALADCO, Berkshire Gas committed $50,000 in energy-saving incentives to this project. Michael Sommer, Manager of Energy Services at to be part of. The projected savings for this project of over 81,000 therms and nearly 1.7 million therms over the life of the equipment, are impressive, to say the least. To put this into perspective, the annual savings from this one project equates to the amount of natural gas needed to heat approximately 70 homes per year.” In addition, the installation required very specialized rigging and plumbing services; ALADCO was able to keep that work local by employing Atlantis Equipment Corporation and Adams Plumbing and Heating.
