Mass Save Program Administrators are bringing down interest rates to make energy efficiency more affordable for Massachusetts residents. Through a $3.8 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy, the Massachusetts Department of Energy Resources is proud to provide expanded HEAT Loan offers. The following 0 percent Interest Loan Options and Barrier Mitigation Grants are available through the Mass Save HEAT Loan for a limited time.

 

Expanded Loan Options

There are now more ways you can maximize your energy savings. The following limited time options are eligible for a 0% Interest HEAT Loan with participating lenders. Whether your interest is in heating with a renewable fuel, maximizing weatherization upgrades, or expanding the scope of your energy-saving projects in a 2-4-family building, these options are available to help you on your way.

Central Wood Pellet Heating Systems
  • 0 percent interest loan up to $25,000 with terms up to 84 months
  • Eligible pellet boiler or pellet furnace must be installed in a 1-4-unit residential building as a central heating system
  • Must meet detailed specifications, including a thermal efficiency rating of 80 percent or greater, an emissions rating <= to 0.10 lb  PM2.5/MMBtu and at least two tons of bulk storage
  • Requires prior approval

 

*Deep Energy Retrofit/Deeper Energy Savings Weatherization Measures
  • 0 percent interest loan up to $50,000 with terms up to 84 months
  • Requires participation in a participating Mass Save Sponsor's  Deeper Energy Savings initiative to go further on weatherization measures. For customers heating with natural gas, participating sponsors include Berkshire Gas, Columbia Gas of Massachusetts, Eversource, Liberty Utilities (Massachusetts), and Unitil. For customers heating with electric, oil, or propane, participating sponsors include Cape Light Compact, Eversource, and Unitil.
  • Funds may be used only for insulation and air sealing measures (excludes roofing and siding, etc.)
  • Requires prior approval

 

Deep Energy Retrofit/Deeper Energy Savings Weatherization Measures 
  • 0 percent interest loan, with the cap increased from $25,000 to $50,000, with terms up to 84 months
  • Requires a work scope encompassing 2-, 3- or 4-dwelling units
  • Funds may be used for any valid HEAT Loan measure
  • Requires prior approval

 

Barrier Mitigation Grants

The following grants are available to assist you with the cost of removing barriers to either your Mass Save weatherization project or your Mass Save-eligible heating system upgrade. These funds are available to you directly when you hire a contractor to perform one of the following:

 

Knob andTube Wiring Remediation 
  • Maximum grant of $3,000
  • Requires a Mass Save Home Energy Assessment
  • Requires hiring a qualified electrical contractor to re-wire live knob andtube wiring
  • Enables a 1-4-unit Mass Save weatherization project to move forward
  • Requires prior approval

 

Asbestos Abatement
  • Maximum grant of $3,000 
  • Requires a Mass Save Home Energy Assessment
  • Requires hiring a qualified asbestos abatement contractor
  • Abatement of pipe insulation or duct insulation that enables a 1-4-unit Mass Save-eligible heating system upgrade to move forward
  • Abatement of attic vermiculite insulation that enables a 1-4-unit Mass Save-eligible insulation upgrade to move forward
  • Requires prior approval
