About Harbor View Hotel

This historic hotel had a goal of reducing it's environmental impact and operating costs and saved over 50% of project costs using Mass Save incentives.

Project Summary

The Harbor View Hotel is an iconic and historic destination on beautiful Martha's Vineyard, in operation since 1891. In an effort to reduce the hotel's environmental impact and operating costs, the hotel's management has undertaken numerous sustainability efforts, including trash compactors to limit the frequency of trash pickup trips, and installation of low-usage showerheads and toilets.

In 2021, the hotel worked with Mass Save® Sponsor Cape Light Compact to make its energy system more efficient. A new energy management system, in combination with smart thermostats that automatically lower energy usage after guests have checked out, have helped make it easy for the hotel to save energy. The Harbor View Hotel's upgrades were made possible by Cape Light Compact's efficiency incentives that covered over 50% of project costs.

“I think it should be important to every citizen, and it's also more important for us being on the island,” said owner Bernard Chiu on the hotel's sustainability efforts. “We need to do everything we can to reduce our carbon footprint.”
