When Julia Cseko’s father decided to relocate from Somerville, Massachusetts, Julia and her husband, Patrick Farley, had the opportunity to purchase his two-family 1920s house from him and turn it into their new family home.
After experiencing drafts and temperature fluctuations during the winter months, Julia and Patrick’s friends recommended looking into energy efficiency programs. The couple’s research led them to schedule a no-cost Home Energy Assessment, which is available to homeowners, renters and landlords through the Mass Save® Sponsors.
After signing up, Julia and Patrick were paired with an Eversource-authorized contractor, to assess their home’s energy performance.
The last updates to the Cseko family home were completed in 2018, when new fixtures and a new roof were installed. Patrick and Julia’s primary goals were to make the home more efficient, decrease draftiness and minimize temperature fluctuations throughout the home.
During the no-cost Home Energy Assessment, the contractor identified several energy-saving opportunities and created a comprehensive decarbonization plan that included:
Prior to starting the work, the contractor found two previously unnoticed attic spaces that Julia and Patrick wanted to make usable. To prepare these areas, the couple completed subflooring and electrical work, utilizing barrier remediation incentives from Eversource to offset the cost of inspecting existing knob and tube wiring.
Once the inspection was complete, the contractor returned to install roof vents and insulation in the attic and walls, seal air leaks and add weatherstripping around three exterior doors. According to ENERGY STAR®, weatherization improvements like this can save up to 15 percent on annual heating and cooling costs.
Today, Julia and Patrick enjoy a warmer, more comfortable home and meaningful energy savings.
