What is a heat pump water heater (HPWH)?

A heat pump water heater is a water heating system with a storage tank that works by the same premise as refrigerators and air conditioners. For example, a refrigerator collects the hot air in the fridge and expels that heat to the surrounding air. In contrast, heat pump water heaters use refrigerant to take the heat from surrounding air and transfer it to water in an enclosed tank. That means they only use electricity to move the heat instead of creating it like other water heaters do, making them up to three times more energy efficient than your standard water heater.

That’s why the Sponsors of Mass Save are offering a $800 rebate to residential electric customers who work with a licensed plumber to purchase and install an ENERGY STAR^® certified HPWH. The rebate is available to customers who are replacing an existing electric storage tank water heater as well as residents who are in the process of building a new home and choose to equip it with a HPWH.

How can a HPWH get me $800?

All you have to do is follow these steps and get ready for the extra cash!

• First, make sure you are a residential electric customer of a Mass Save Program Sponsor.
• Review the list of Qualified Heat Pump Water Heaters with your licensed plumber to find out which one is right for you and have your plumber install it in your home.
• Once your licensed plumber has completed all the work, fill out the mail-in rebate form or submit your application online. Include a receipt for the water heater and installation invoice from your plumber (sometimes all in one document). Make sure it includes the date of installation and the make and model of your new HPWH.
• Get ready to save energy and cash while receiving a well-earned rebate.
