Benefits of a Home Energy Assessment

December 18, 2015

What’s a home energy assessment? Why is it important? Who does it and can I have one done at my home? Winter is a perfect time to consider all of these questions. And don’t worry, while it may seem like a lot of information, we’ve got all the facts for you right here… so keep reading!

What’s a Home Energy Assessment?

A home energy assessment is simple: an Energy Specialist makes a visit to your home, assesses its current energy use, installs no-cost instant energy savings products like efficient light bulbs, and provides a customized list of recommendations to save you energy and money. The Energy Specialist will help you develop a plan to make your house more efficient overall.

And oh yeah, it’s no-cost!

Why Should I Have One?

Home energy assessments are designed to provide a detailed and personalized plan for getting the most out of your house, while finding the best rebates for new high-efficiency appliances, water heaters, and heating and cooling systems. An assessment helps provide a thorough understanding of your options when it comes to saving on energy.

Having a home energy assessment this winter will not only give a strong read on your home’s energy consumption in the cold months, but it will also help set the stage for what to expect in the warmer months of the year.

Here’s what you Can Expect

A home energy assessment typically takes 1.5 to 2.5 hours, depending on the size of your home and its layout.

The assessment should be done when all decision-makers of the household are present. This is to ensure that the Energy Specialist is aware of all of the home’s nuances and can help the homeowners make informed decisions. Renters in 1-to-4 unit properties can take advantage of an assessment, but any decisions about insulation, heating systems, and other major upgrades will need to be made by the property owner.

The Energy Specialist will:

  • Look at your house from top to bottom, attic to basement.
  • Install no-cost instant energy savings products, like LED light bulbs, programmable thermostats, low-flow showerheads, faucet aerators, and advanced power strips.
  • Check for insulation and air sealing opportunities.
  • Complete combustion safety testing on any gas equipment.
  • Give you a report with a list of recommendations, estimated costs to install equipment, savings estimates, and next steps.
