Cumberland Farms

About Cumberland Farms

Cumberland Farms was founded in 1939 in Cumberland, Rhode Island, as a one-cow dairy farm, opening its first dairy store in Bellingham, Massachusetts in the mid-1950s. As the number of locations grew, Cumberland Farms added new products and services, as well as self-serve gasoline pumps to stores, making it New England’s first true convenience store. Cumberland Farms is now the largest of EG America’s convenience and retail brands with more than 575 stores in Connecticut, Florida, Massachusetts, Maine, New York, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont. EG America is one of the fastest-growing convenience store retailers in the U.S., with 1,500 locations and 18,000 team members.

Why They Are a 2025 Climate Leader

Cumberland Farms is focused on increasing energy efficiency and reducing greenhouse gas emissions across retail operations. Most recently the company installed building management systems in some stores to monitor and control HVAC systems. It also activated demand response in those stores to reduce energy consumption and strain on the power grid. In addition, warehouse equipment such as forklifts and a floor scrubber were converted from gas to battery-operated. Looking ahead, Cumberland Farms plans to implement variable frequency drive (VFD) projects and refrigeration upgrades at its warehouse and continue to make strides in advancing its decarbonization goals.
