Background

Amanda Kingsley and her family have lived in their late‑1800s home in Shelburne Falls, Massachusetts, since 2002. Like many older New England houses, the home relied on a patchwork of heating sources over the years, including an aging oil furnace and a pellet stove, which led to uneven temperatures, system noise and ongoing maintenance challenges.

In December 2025, those challenges reached a breaking point when the home’s nearly-40 year-old oil furnace failed, coating the house in soot and leaving the family without heat during the coldest part of the year. Facing an urgent need for a reliable solution, Amanda partnered with Eversource and one of their approved contractors to make energy efficiency upgrades that addressed the issues once and for all.

Goal

Amanda’s priority was to restore heat quickly while finding a long-term solution that could deliver consistent comfort throughout the home. She wanted to move away from oil, simplify how the family heats the house and ensure they feel comfortable in every room without the constant hot and cold cycles they had lived with for years.

Solution

The Kingsley family qualified for the Mass Save® Residential Turnkey Solutions program, which offers a fully managed home energy improvement package for income-qualifying customers with expert support at every step.

Completed upgrades included:

  • Whole-home heat pump installation: A combination of ducted heat pumps on the upper floor and ductless mini splits on the main level now provide steady, reliable heating throughout the home
  • Attic and basement insulation improvements: Targeted insulation upgrades reduced heat loss and the home now better maintains even temperatures from room to room

Following the furnace failure in December, installation was completed by late January, restoring heat as quickly as possible during winter conditions.

As a result, the Kingsley family experienced an immediate shift in comfort with consistent temperatures, quiet operation and no more oil deliveries or pellet management. The heat pumps perform reliably through the winter and even provide efficient cooling during warmer days, marking the family’s first experience with whole-home air conditioning.

The information in this case study is an accurate representation of this customer’s experience at the time of publication. Results, including cost savings, from heat pump installation and/or other energy efficiency measures can vary based on each individual customer’s situation.

“The quality of the heat has far exceeded our expectations. Every room just feels good now. It’s consistent, quiet and so much easier than what we had before. Thanks to Eversource, what started as a nightmare turned into an incredible improvement for our family.”
