Background

Carlisle Kids’ House is a nonprofit childcare center in Carlisle, Massachusetts, serving toddlers through fifth grade students with year-round programming as well as summer camp. When Executive Director Kristin Tully stepped into her role, she assumed responsibility of a building with more than a decade of deferred maintenance and soon turned her attention to identifying opportunities for long‑term energy savings and operational efficiency.

Challenge

The center’s aging building had not been updated for approximately 15 years, leading to poor energy performance.

Results

  • Reduced energy usage, contributing to lower energy bills
  • Improved heating and cooling efficiency

Solution

Through the Mass Save® program, a utility-approved energy specialist from RISE Engineering conducted a comprehensive onsite assessment, identifying critical energy issues and outlining a step-by-step improvement plan.

Carlisle Kids’ House received technical guidance, onsite project support and incentives to complete essential building upgrades affordably, including:

  • Air sealing and insulation in the attic
  • Sealing of two unused HVAC vents to eliminate unnecessary airflow

Carlisle House has reduced its lifetime CO2 emissions by over 66 tons – equivalent to avoiding the greenhouse gas emissions that would result from driving over 150,000 miles in a gas-powered car. The tighter building envelope has strengthened the building’s overall performance and contributed to a more comfortable environment for faculty, staff and students.

The information in this case study is an accurate representation of this customer’s experience at the time of publication. Results, including cost savings, from heat pump installation and/or other energy efficiency measures can vary based on each individual customer’s situation.

“Programs like Mass Save make an enormous difference for nonprofits like ours. Their support, guidance and incentives allowed us to complete improvements we couldn’t otherwise afford – savings we can put toward our teachers, kids, and classrooms. If only more programs like this existed!”
– Kristin Tully, Executive Director
