Mass Save® Sponsors Celebrate National Recycling Day With 83,767 Appliances Recycled

Recycling accomplishments lead to huge environmental benefits

MASSACHUSETTS (November 13, 2020) – In the past five years, the Sponsors of Mass Save, including Cape Light Compact, Eversource, National Grid and Unitil, have recycled 83,767 inefficient refrigerators and freezers through the Mass Save appliance recycling program.

In addition to saving energy in households across Massachusetts, properly recycling appliances can have a major environmental impact, including repairing the ozone layer, reducing carbon dioxide emissions and reducing waste sent to landfills.

The reduction in carbon emissions from recycling these appliances is equivalent to:

  • 9,691 homes’ energy use for one year or
  • Charging 10,297,875,920 phones or
  • 3,068,882 incandescent lamps switched to LEDs

Additionally, the program has kept the following materials out of landfills:

  • 8,979,822 pounds metals
  • 201,041 pounds of glass
  • 1,088,971 pounds of plastic

“Many people may not be aware of the positive impact that properly recycling an appliance can have on both a household’s energy costs as well as on the environment,” says Elizabeth Terry, Customer Operations at National Grid. “We’re proud of what we’ve accomplished so far and are committed to continuing to make it easy to properly recycle an appliance.”

By responsibly recycling your inefficient fridge or freezer, which use less efficient technology, and replacing it with a new ENERGY STAR® certified model, you can save more than $200 over the lifetime of the appliance.

Residential electric customers of Cape Light Compact, Eversource, National Grid and Unitil can earn a $75 rebate plus get no-cost, no-contact pickup and removal when they recycle an inefficient refrigerator or freezer through the Mass Save appliance recycling program. Participating in the program ensures your unit is properly recycled.
