Ground source heat pumps (also known as geothermal heat pumps) are the most efficient type of heat pump. They can do all of the heating and cooling in your building.

They work by extracting heat from the ground during cold weather and distributing it throughout your business. During warmer months, this process is reversed to provide cooling.

These heat pumps are great for businesses with sufficient outdoor space to accommodate the system.

  • Must be an existing customer of Berkshire Gas, Cape Light Compact, Eversource, Liberty Utilities, National Grid, or Unitil
  • Equipment must be installed by a licensed contractor—please note that equipment installation may be subject to an on-site verification
  • Equipment must be qualified, listed with, and certified by the Air-Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute (AHRI) and meet the minimum efficiency requirements outlined in the rebate form
  • Equipment must also be used for heating and cooling and must supplement or replace oil, propane, natural gas, or electric resistance as the primary heating system. Refer to for a list of qualified models or reach out to [email protected] before installation if units are not listed by AHRI or found on the QPL
    • Installations that are partially displacing existing heating systems must either install an integrated control or have a building management system that is capable of controlling the existing system and the heat pump, subject to the stated switchover temp
  • Contact your Program Sponsor before installation if:
    • The proposed project is more than 150 tons for Cape Light Compact, Eversource, or National Grid customers, or more than 10 tons or $25,000 total rebate value for Berkshire Gas, Liberty Utilities, or Unitil customers. Larger systems will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
    • The proposed project is for a new building being constructed, major renovation, or multi-family building
    • The heat pumps that are being installed will be using a hydronic or water loop internal to the building (i.e., not a ground loop) as a heat source/sink
