About As Good As New

Living in New England, Vance and his family are no strangers to the typical rugged winter. However, because their home wasn’t properly insulated, it was difficult to keep warm inside. “When you walked from the hallway to the bedroom, you felt the chill,” Vance said. “You wanted to jump under the blankets.”

In early 2020, Vance’s family decided they were going to move. As they were preparing to put their house on the market, the pandemic began, and their plans quickly shifted. At that point, they determined that even though the time wasn’t right to leave, they could at least make some needed improvements to their home.

Vance decided to get a no-cost Home Energy Assessment to see how they could save money and energy and make their home more comfortable.

Solution

No-cost Home Energy Assessments and energy-saving upgrades are available for eligible homeowners, renters and landlords through Eversource, a Mass Save® Sponsor. During the pandemic, Eversource began providing virtual assessments as well as a limited-time special offer of 100% off recommended insulation improvements.

Insulation was recommended for Vance’s bedroom, attic crawlspace and other areas of the home that lacked insulation. For added comfort and energy savings, two high-efficiency minisplit heat pumps were installed, which Vance paid for with 0% financing through the Mass Save HEAT Loan Program. Additionally, no-cost energy-saving products, including LED bulbs, an advanced power strip and low-flow showerheads, were sent directly to his home.

In total, Vance received over $12,000 in incentives from Eversource for his energy efficiency improvements. Six months after his upgrades, he had already saved about $300 in energy costs, with even greater energy savings expected during the winter, thanks to lower heating costs.

Vance and his family couldn’t be happier with their improvements in their home.

“I feel like it is a brand-new construction from an energy efficiency standpoint. It’s the kind of thing where people say that is too good to be true.”
