Cape Air and Provincetown Airport Make Energy Efficient Upgrades - and Savings - a Reality

May 11, 2021

Cape Air, an employee-owned company based in Hyannis, Massachusetts, has grown from three flights a day between Provincetown and Boston in 1989 to 400 flights a day in 2021. The airline serves approximately 500,000 passengers annually as one of the largest regional airlines in the U.S.

Last year, Cape Air’s Sustainability Program worked in collaboration with the Provincetown Airport Manager Butch Lisenby and Mass Save® Sponsor Cape Light Compact to conduct an energy assessment to see if the efficiency of the lighting at the airport could be improved by retrofitting its existing lighting with Light Emitting Diode (LED) lamps and fixtures. The assessment report concluded that 37,750 kWh could be saved annually, cutting electricity use at the airport by 30%.

With the help of limited time offers and incentives from Cape Light Compact made available to commercial customers, Cape Air and Provincetown Airport were able to successfully proceed with the recommended energy saving upgrades, all of which are expected to save the airport 29.6 metrics tons of greenhouse gases and $7,000 in electric costs annually. And as an added bonus: the upgraded lighting technology is expected to last for at least 15 years, reducing annual maintenance costs for the airport.
