Mass Save® Sponsors Cape Light Compact, Eversource, National Grid and Unitil win 2018 Advanced RTU Campaign Award for Commercial and Industrial HVAC program

WALTHAM, Mass. (April 11, 2018) – The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) recently announced that Mass Save is one of seven organizations being recognized nationally for its leadership in replacing inefficient HVAC equipment known as RTUs (rooftop units) with energy-efficient upgrades. Commercial buildings use RTUs for cooling, heating, or a combination of both.

The Better Buildings Alliance’s Advanced Rooftop Unit Campaign (ARC) – a DOE initiative – recognized Mass Save’s Commercial and Industrial HVAC program for the most installations of high-efficiency RTUs and advanced controls through an efficiency program. The Mass Save Commercial and Industrial HVAC program is sponsored by Cape Light Compact, Eversource, National Grid and Unitil.

"Jason Hartke of the U.S. Department of Energy presents Eversource’s Erin Engelkemeyer and National Grid’s Jenn Parsons with the award at the PRSM National Conference in Nashville, TN on April 10."

“By partnering directly with HVAC distributors across Massachusetts, we are able to provide discounts to our customers on the most efficient commercial HVAC equipment on the market,” said Eversource Senior Vice President and Chief Customer Officer Penni Conner. “We have made it easier for our customers to access the equipment they need, when they need it. It is an honor to be among the Mass Save Sponsors recognized by the DOE for these efforts, and we will continue to work with distributors to connect our customers to the best solutions for savings.”

Typically, high-efficiency commercial HVAC equipment is a special order. This program encourages distributors to keep the energy-saving equipment in stock, preventing unnecessary delivery delays that often lead to businesses purchasing less efficient units.

In 2017, Mass Save’s program led to nearly 6,500 total qualifying units sold across the state, which saved customers over 9.6 million kWh annual savings, or nearly $1.5 million1.

“Mass Save’s Commercial and Industrial HVAC program makes it easier for me to get the most energyefficient units into the hands of commercial and industrial customers,” said Steve Ginns, Owner of S.J. Ginns Associates, one of the participating distributors in the Mass Save program. “The program offers incentives that allow me to lower my cost below what the factory offers. I am able to get new equipment quickly to customers, who end up with better equipment and year-after-year energy savings.”

About the Advanced RTU Campaign: The Advanced RTU Campaign is a market transformation initiative that encourages commercial building owners and operators to improve the efficiency of roof top units across the country. By replacing old RTUs with more efficient units, retrofitting existing RTUs with advanced controls, and implementing intelligent controls and automated fault detection and diagnostics (AFDD), you can save money, improve your energy efficiency, make your building more comfortable, and help the environment. Reducing a building's cooling and ventilating energy consumption by 20–50% can save as much as $3,700 per RTU—equivalent to $6.7 billion and 670 trillion Btu annually.
