The Sponsors of Mass Save® and Generac Grid Services Awarded $50 Million DOE Grant to Deploy Battery Systems in 2,000 Massachusetts Homes

Partnership will create national model in advancing home heating electrification and cost-saving energy efficiency upgrades for low- and -moderate-income residents

BOSTON (November 9, 2023)  – The Sponsors of Mass Save® today announced a new partnership with Generac Grid Services to provide energy efficiency technologies to 2,000 low- and moderate-income (LMI) customers across Massachusetts. The partnership aims to reduce energy use and grid load, while supporting an inclusive path to decarbonization.

The partnership, made possible by a $50 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy’s Grid Resilience and Innovation Partnerships (GRIP) program, will serve as a replicable model that can be scaled to promote grid resilience in communities across the country.

The funding accelerates the important home heating electrification work already underway by the Sponsors in support of the Commonwealth’s decarbonization goals. Through the GRIP program, the Sponsors will disseminate innovative grid-edge technologies such as home battery systems, thermostats paired with heat pumps, and water-heating load control switches to minimize and optimize the impacts of new heating and transportation electrification load on the grid while lowering energy costs for LMI customers.

“Massachusetts has long been a national leader in energy efficiency and decarbonization and our new partnership with Generac Grid Services allows us to more quickly advance programs that support both our customers and the Commonwealth’s decarbonization goals in a just and inclusive clean energy transition,” said Tilak Subrahmanian, Vice President of Energy Efficiency and Electric Mobility at Eversource. “We are excited to partner with Generac Grid Services to move Massachusetts forward and to bring more affordable clean energy solutions to more homes and customers in Massachusetts.”

“Ensuring that the clean energy transition is both equitable and inclusive of all who live and work in the Commonwealth is a key pillar of the Sponsor’s Three-Year Energy Efficiency Plan. This influx of funding allows us to more quickly support our customers with the tools they need to take part in the transition to net zero,” said Chris Porter, Director of Customer Energy Management at National Grid.

“Generac looks forward to working with the Sponsors of Mass Save to bring distributed batteries, thermostats and heat pumps to residents across Massachusetts,” said Anne Hoskins, Senior Vice President of Policy and Market Development at Generac. “The combination of funding from the DOE GRIP and Mass Save programs will increase reliability for both residents and the grid by integrating and managing these resources.”

The GRIP program, offered through the U.S. Department of Energy’s Grid Deployment Office, is designed to enhance grid flexibility, improve the resilience of the power system, and ensure access to affordable, reliable, clean electricity. This grant is part of a historic $10.5 billion investment by the U.S. Department of Energy.
