New Expanded HEAT Loan offerings are brought to you by the Massachusetts Department of Energy Resources with a $3.8 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy. The following 0% Loan Options and Barrier Mitigation Grants are available for a limited time through the Mass Save® HEAT Loan Program. Act now to increase the comfort of your home and maximize your savings!

Expanded Loan Options

There are now more ways you can maximize your energy savings. For a limited time, the following options are eligible to be included in a 0% HEAT Loan with participating lenders. Whether your interest is in heating with renewable fuel, maximizing weatherization upgrades or expanding the scope of your energy-saving projects in a 2-4 family building, these options are available to help you on your way!

Biomass Wood Pellet Boilers

  • 0% interest loan up to $25,000 with terms up to 84 months
  • Must be installed in a 1-4 unit residential building as a central heating system
  • Must meet detailed specifications, including a thermal efficiency rating of 80% or greater, an emissions rating <= to 0.15 lb/MMBtu and at least 2 tons of bulk storage
  • Requires prior approval

*Deep Energy Retrofit/Deeper Energy Savings weatherization measures

  • 0% interest loan up to $50,000 with terms up to 84 months
  • Requires participation in National Grid’s “Deep Energy Retrofit” initiative or any other Mass Save® Sponsor’s “Deeper Energy Savings” initiative to go further on weatherization measures
  • Funds may be used only for insulation and air sealing measures (excludes roofing, siding, etc.)
  • Requires prior approval

Expanded 2-4 Family Loans

  • 0% interest loan, with the cap increased from $25,000 to $50,000 with terms up to 84 months
  • Requires a work scope encompassing 2, 3 or 4 dwelling units
  • Funds may be used for any valid HEAT Loan measure
  • Requires prior approval

Barrier Mitigation Grants

Take advantage of the following grants to assist you with the cost of removing barriers to either your Mass Save® weatherization project or your Mass Save®-eligible heating system upgrade. These funds are available to you directly when you hire a contractor to perform one of the following:

Knob & Tube Wiring Remediation

  • Maximum grant of $2000
  • Requires a Mass Save® Home Energy Assessment
  • Requires hiring a qualified electrical contractor to re-wire live knob & tube wiring
  • Enables a 1-4 unit Mass Save® weatherization project to move forward
  • Requires prior approval

Asbestos Abatement

  • Maximum grant of $3000
  • Requires a Mass Save® Home Energy Assessment
  • Requires hiring a qualified asbestos abatement contractor
  • Enables a 1-4 unit Mass Save®-eligible heating system upgrade to move forward
  • Requires prior approval
