VSDs reduce energy consumption by operating at speeds that vary over time based on changing loads. Standard pump and fan systems always run at full speed, consuming more electricity than required to do the job. A variable speed drive slows a fan or pump down when the actual load decreases.
This program is available to businesses in Massachusetts that are customers of these Program Administrators:
- Cape Light Compact
- National Grid
- Western Massachusetts Electric
Equipment shall be new and shall be installed in a commercial, industrial, institutional, educational, or municipal building within an electric Program Administrator’s service territory.
Product types listed in the Application Form are eligible for prescriptive incentives. However, other measures not listed may be eligible for custom incentives using the Custom Retrofit Application Form.
VSDs must be controlled by an automatic signal in response to modulating air/water flows. The VSD speed must be automatically controlled by differential pressure, flow or temperature.
Applicants must demonstrate significant load diversity that will result in savings through motor speed variation.
Motors must operate a minimum of 2,000 hours annually.
The following VSD applications are NOT eligible for prescriptive incentives under this application:
- Forward curve fans with inlet guide vanes
- Variable pitch vane-axial fans
- Planned replacement or replacement of previously failed VSD
- VSD used for balancing
- Two-speed cooling tower fans
- VSD used as two-speed control of fan or pump
- VSD used to mitigate over-sized motor installation
